I heard a song on the radio this evening and the lyrics stood out to me. The chorus went like this…
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school,
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool,
Till you’re so f - ing crazy you can’t follow their rules,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
I sort of recognized the voice of the singer as Billie Joe Armstrong from the band Green Day. To verify, I searched the lyrics and the band name and found that is was Green day singing a cover of a John Lennon song named “A Working Class Hero is Something to be”. I also learned that this was from an upcoming double CD album featuring more than 20 John Lennon songs and was organized by Amnesty International as part of the Save Darfur campaign. From Amnesty International’s website…
In an historic effort to mobilize activism around the human rights atrocities occurring in Darfur, Sudan, more than 50 international recording artists and over 30 record labels have united behind Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. The collection features iconic songs by legendary musician and peace activist John Lennon recorded by an array of best-selling artists and will be available for purchase both on CD and as digital downloads via online retailers.
In keeping with its long tradition of activism powered by music, Amnesty International, the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization, will use Yoko Ono’s generous gift of Lennon’s solo catalogue as the centerpiece of its campaign to rally activists toward human rights activism for the people of Darfur. The Instant Karma mobilization centers on saving the lives of innocent women, children and men who are dying by the thousands and restoring peace in the region.
I will be doing my small part to help in this campaign by purchasing this album from the iTunes music store. To learn more about the artists and songs featured on this album, feel free to visit iTunes yourself and check it out.

I’m a supporter too! I love this song. If you listen closely, it sounds like “A working class hero is something to fear” which is my preferred lyric. We should fear becoming the working class robot.
