I heard a disturbing report about plastic garbage in the Pacific Ocean, and once I started researching this further, I was both appalled and ashamed of my race, the human race. I’m not an environmental extremist, but c’mon people! (myself included).

Can You Afford This Car?

A company named Tata Motors in India unveiled their newest vehicle today, the Nano, a car that would sell for 100,000 lupee, or $2,500 dollars! You heard me right folks, $2,500. This could bring car ownership to millions of people in India, but some complain that so many news cars would overrun roads and create environmental problems.

Of course, you wouldn’t expect that this car would be luxury would you? How about only one windshield wiper, or a non-existent passenger side mirror? I’ll take the deluxe please.

What kind of vehicle do you think will eventually take over the market? Electric, hydrogen, air-powered?

Science, Evolution, and Creationism

I was interested to learn about a new book released today by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) called Science, Evolution, and Creationism. Whatever your opinion is on the debate between science and creationism, this book promises to be interesting.

The official press release:

SCIENCE, EVOLUTION, AND CREATIONISM is a book designed to give the public a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the current scientific understanding of evolution and its importance in the science classroom. Recent advances in science and medicine, along with an abundance of observations and experiments over the past 150 years, have reinforced evolution’s role as the central organizing principle of modern biology, said the committee that wrote the book.

“SCIENCE, EVOLUTION, AND CREATIONISM provides the public with coherent explanations and concrete examples of the science of evolution,” said NAS President Ralph Cicerone. “The study of evolution remains one of the most active, robust, and useful fields in science.”

“Understanding evolution is essential to identifying and treating disease,” said Harvey Fineberg, president of IOM. “For example, the SARS virus evolved from an ancestor virus that was discovered by DNA sequencing. Learning about SARS’ genetic similarities and mutations has helped scientists understand how the virus evolved. This kind of knowledge can help us anticipate and contain infections that emerge in the future.”

You may have read my previous post about Snowglobe boy and his Holiday spirit. Well, it turns out that this advertising stunt could have been more, much more. Snowglobe Boy

I’ve never seen Christmas spirit like this guy has! Snowglobe Boy has a mission. That mission is to spread holiday cheer to all who view him via three separate web cams, sit in an inflatable snowglobe for as long as he possibly can. Although this is the brainchild of the McKinney ad agency, this stunt has made me feel all gushy inside with holiday spirit. Go snowglobe boy, go!

What I love:

It’s personal. I can see who’s behind the posts, I think this adds great value and keeps me coming back for more.
It’s well laid out and offers tons of great advice for both bloggers, internet geeks, as well as your average “non-techy” reader.

Travel tips galore!

What I love less:

It’s hosted on Blogger. I am a Wordpress devotee and I think this blog in particular would be better served from a self hosted Wordpress installation. Not only would the writer’s have more freedom with the overall design, but they would also have access to hundreds of free plugins to enhance the functionality of their site.
It’s slow loading for me, but that may be due to our distance from each other.

Ancient Cave Found in Dolakha

What once was home to prehistoric humans has been found inside a tunnel located at the foothills of Bhirkuna area of Gaurimudi VDC, some 40 kilometers from district headquarters Charikot.Locals said that although they occasionally ventured inside while hunting for porcupines, they never knew about its origin and the expanse of the cave. Ganesh Bahadur Tamang, a local claimed that he and his hunting mates often sneaked inside the tunnel looking for porcupines. “We walked for nearly two hours inside the hole, but returned after we didn’t find the end of the tunnel,” Tamang said.

The tunnel was not known to anyone except locals of Gaurimudi village until recently. Locals also informed that the cave is some 1.5 kilometers long.

Tamang said that although the opening to the tunnel seemed narrow, his group of hunters found a wide pathway a little further from the entrance.

According to Tamang, one has to walk stooping for five minutes from the entrance to find a second narrow hole beyond which stone-built stairs are present. Thirty minutes straight from the stairs, one can find a Chautara (public resting place) along with shelter holes.

“We also found a pond nearly the size of a room after walking for five minutes below the Chautara,” Tamang said, fascinated by the finding. Tamang said that though his team didn’t venture beyond the pond, he had also heard elderly villagers talking about water spouts inside the tunnel.

Dal Bahadur Tamang, an elderly person from one of the villages stressed that his forefathers might have built the cave in prehistoric times. “The pores in the walls are built probably to let air ventilate inside the tunnel so that persons inside could easily breathe,” he said.

Local youths, who remain bemused by the tunnel’s presence right next to their homes, said that the builders had used scientific methods to dig such a burrow in the distant past. “This can really be a matter of deep investigation,” said Dabal Tamang, a local youth.

Legislator Pakhrin recalls cave escapade

CPN-UML legislator of interim parliament Shanti Pakhrin, who also hails from the same village, claims that she had once ventured inside the tunnel during her childhood. She reminisces walking through the dark tunnel while herding goats and “gaping at enigmatic places” inside the cave. Pakhrin also asserted that she would “give her best efforts to bring the place into notice.”

Environmentalism Gone Too Far? You be the Judge.

Ok, I’m all for taking steps to help preserve the environment and trying to live a eco-conscious life, but I recently learned of a product that I have a hard time getting my head around. A reusable menstrual pad from Stella Pads.

Ladies, I’m asking you directly. Is this really a good idea? Would you go through the trouble it takes to use this product? Read the care instructions from their website:

Care Instructions:
Please wash prior to use. Rinse pads with cold water as soon as possible after use. Either store pads in a dry pail, or a pail full of water, changing the water daily until laundry day (you can add a little detergent if you wish). Wash in hot or cold water with a basic detergent without fabric softener. Pads with PUL can be both washed and dried on high heat.

Get Smart, with a New Car

Whether or not you’ve read my previous post on the Pay by the Mile Car Insurance company MileMeter that’s coming soon, you may be interested to learn of another great idea coming to America in 2008; the Smart Car.

I can’t speak for all Americans, but I am fed up with the slow movement of the car industry to move toward more fuel efficient cars, and the Smart Car is a huge step in the right direction. Although the Smart Car isn’t the “end all” solution for fuel economy and environmentally minded transportation, I truly believe that we are ready to embrace a change.

Here’s the latest from Yahoo News:

German car maker Daimler said Tuesday that next month’s launch of its tiny Smart car in the United States will unleash such stiff demand the company will have trouble meeting it.

“We will not be able to meet demand thus far” for 2008, Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said here at a news briefing.

More than 30,000 US customers have put down 99-dollar deposits to reserve one of the fuel-saving, two-seat Smart Fortwo, which will begin arriving in the massive US market in January, he said.

“Down payments are going far beyond the production capacity we have,” the chairman said, without providing a sales forecast for the US market.

Many analysts question the ability of the super-small Smart, which measures a mere 2.5 meters (eight feet) in length, to succeed in the country of hulking gasoline-guzzling vehicles.

“Times have changed,” Zetsche said, pointing to growing concerns of American consumers about global warming.

The Smart Fortwo will be marketed via 70 dealerships in the leading US cities, the company said.

In its most basic version, the micro car will sell for 11,590 dollars, excluding tax. The company said that a Smart equipped with all the options was expected to cost some 20,000 dollars, including tax.

“We are not looking for customers looking for the cheapest vehicle,” Zetsche said.

Daimler clearly signaled it was aiming to emulate Apple’s success with electronics gadgets in the US market.

“Like owning an Apple i-Mac, i-Pod or i-Phone, Smart documents the open-minded attitude of the ‘thought leaders,’ who choose innovative solutions as an existential part of their everyday lives,” the company said in a press brochure.
