Psystar’s claim against the ‘Apple monopoly’ dismissed

    By Seth Weintraub | November 18, 2008

Psystar open ComputerJudge William Alsup of the U.S. Federal Court for the Northern District of California ruled today that Apple is not not using anti-competitive in its use of Mac OSX.  This is a major setback for the chances of Psystar to win their lawsuit with Apple.

But what are they fighting for anyway?  The right to sell computers that run MacOSX?  Dell and HP do this.  In fact every PC manufacturer in the world does to some extent.  With a USB dongle or some BIOS modifications, most PCs with the proper drivers can become a Mac.

Google Mobile App for iPhone Voice Search first look

    By Seth Weintraub | November 18, 2008

After some minor delay drama, Google/Apple last night went live with the Google Mobile App for iPhone. I've noticed the initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Don't get me wrong, this is a really cool technology, but I don't see myself using this often enough (yet) to make it a truly revolutionary application.

Use Quicksilver for Finder cut and paste

    By MacOSXHints.com | November 18, 2008

For those of us who miss being able to cut and paste in the Finder, I just found a pretty functional way to do it through Quicksilver triggers. Here’s how:

    1. Invoke Quicksilver (probably by pressing Control-Space)
    2. Press Command-, to open its preferences
    3. Go to Preferences » Application, and make sure ‘Enable advanced features’ is checked
    4. Go to Catalog » Quicksilver and make sure ‘Proxy objects’ is checked
    5. Go to Triggers and click the plus sign to add a new trigger and select Hotkey
    6. Start typing Current Selection, and when the item pops up, press Tab
    7. Start typing Move to… and then press Tab
    8. In the last box, press Command-X clear the field. It must be completely empty for this to work — no text, nothing
    9. Click Save
    10. Click the ‘i’ at the bottom right of the screen to show the trigger options
    11. Under hot key, choose your preferred ke…

Another method of using an external editor in iPhoto

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 17, 2008

I wasn’t happy with the red eye editing in iPhoto, so I bought Photoshop Elements 6, which gives much better results. One thing I discovered is that with iPhoto open, I can drag a photo onto Elements in the dock, do the red eye adjustment, save it, and the newly-adjusted photo appears directly where it was in iPhoto. The original can still be reverted, too.

[robg adds: iPhoto offers, of course, the Edit Photo pop-up in the General section of its preferences, where you can specify any image editing program to use when editing a photo. I wasn’t aware, however, that you could (successfully) drag-and-drop an image from iPhoto to a program in the dock.]

A collection of tips for those with problematic Apple TVs

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 17, 2008

I must have gotten a bad first-generation Apple TV -- I've had so many issues troubleshooting it that I've almost become an expert. This afternoon, I finally found the time to write up all my Apple TV troubleshooting tricks, including one that involves a freezer:
But one day I had a bunch of friends over and we wanted to watch a movie on the Apple TV. And wouldn't you know it, the damn thing got too hot and froze again. Restarts weren't working and I didn't have hours to wait for it to cool down. So I tossed my Apple TV in the freezer for 10 minutes. After that, I hooked it back up and it worked fine.

WARNING: Before you even entertain the freezer trick, let me just say this: don't do it. I'm just telling you about something I did to get my Apple TV working again that involved my freezer. If you decide to put your Apple TV in the freezer and it cracks, explodes or gets soaked by an...

How to possibly fix an ‘ALLOC-MEM too big!’ error

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 17, 2008

Over the weekend, my 12" PowerBook G4 was involved in an incident that, I thought, spelled certain doom for my all-time-favorite Apple laptop. I was using the machine with it perched on my knees, and happened to be applying the Safari software update when disaster struck. The update was at that point where the OS has shut down and the progress bar is marching across the screen. Just then, our youngest child came sneaking up on me and applied a running hug-tackle (I was on the sofa at the time, but hug-tackles can happen anywhere). At impact, the PowerBook flew off my knee and landed on the back right corner on the (thankfully) carpeted floor. When the machine hit the floor, it instantly kernel panicked, and I thought "well, that couldn't have happened at a worse time."

When I tried to boot it, I got a chime, but nothing else. Every trick I tried, including booting from a CD and setting it up in FireWire target disk mode, failed. Then I tried resetting PRAM, which also didn't ...

Remove duplicate birthday events in iCal

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 14, 2008

I've had several instances of birthdays in the iCal birthday calendar showing up twice. It finally bugged me enough to look at. I had Syncrospector up and was about to perform surgery, when I tried something simpler that didn't require a scalpel.

Uncheck Show Birthdays calendar in iCal's preferences, then recheck it. That cleaned it out for me.

[robg adds: You can read more about Syncrospector in this hint, or in this tutorial on Apple's site.]

Send file a little faster with Bluetooth File Exchange

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 14, 2008

Simply drop the item you want to send via Bluetooth File Exchange (BFE) onto its icon in the Dock, then select the relevant device from the list that appears. No need to use the BFE menulet in the menu bar, thus saving that step. The menulet icon of BFE could be removed from the menu bar if you find the Dock method more convenient.

      Applies to Panther, Tiger, Leopard

      Adjust song speed in GarageBand

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 14, 2008

When you add a song into GarageBand from iTunes, you can cut it up and play with it a bit, but what about changing the tempo of the song? You'll notice that adjusting the tempo does not change the tempo of your iTunes added song. So how can you get around this? Here's how you do it.
      1. Drag in the song from iTunes, or record yourself.
      2. Select the song and press Control-Option-G and deselect the song.
      3. The song now turns purple, and you can open up the track editor and check the check box that says Follow Tempo & Pitch.
Now when you change your project tempo, the song will go with it. Hooray!

Travel tips for Mac laptop users on United Airlines

      By MacOSXHints.com | November 14, 2008

Not sure this is a hint, more a warning and how to get around it. I fly often and have to upgrade to Business so as to ensure a power socket at the seat. And I fly United because of their generous air miles packages which make upgrading affordable. However, United Business have new lie-flat seats, with a new 110V power supply instead of the old airplane-style one. The problem is that the socket is recessed in the console, and even the smaller power brick for the MacBook Air won’t fit (you can insert the pins, but not far enough). There are a few ways around this:

      1. Upgrade to First — the power socket is not recessed.
      2. Ask if you can charge the MacBook in First, and watch a movie at your regular Business seat while it charges.
      3. Bring an international travel adaptor with you (e.g. use the 3 pin UK plug on the power brick, and attach it to an adaptor for the US 2-pin style — if your adaptor is a standard size, it’s likely to fit into the recessed socket).
