10.5: Exploring OS X with dtrace

    Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

One of the new 10.5 tools for developers is a program called dtrace — you’ll need the Developer Tools installed to use this tool. From man dtrace, you can learn…

The dtrace command is a generic front-end to the DTrace facility. The command implements a simple interface to invoke the D language compiler, the ability to retrieve buffered trace data from the DTrace kernel facility, and a set of basic routines to format and print traced data.

Users new to DTrace are encouraged to read: How To Use DTrace. Sun Microsystems, 2005.

Wow, doesn’t that sound thrilling!? You’re right, it doesn’t. But it turns out that dtrace can be useful for things that even mere mortals may be interested in. And the folks at MacTec…

How to find and remove the OSX.RSPlug.A malware

    Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

As reported in many places, including Macworld, there’s a new OS X malware in the wild, first reported by Intego, who named it OSX.RSPlug.A (where do they get these names?).

I spent some time this morning looking at this malware, and wrote this article explaining how to find out if you’ve been infected, and how to remove the programs if you have. If you want all the details, you can read the article. If you just want to know how to remove the malware, here’s the simple process:

    1. In the Finder, navigate to /Library -> Internet Plug-Ins, and delete the file named plugins.settings. Empty the trash. This deletes the tool that sets the rogue DNS Server information.
    2. In Terminal, type sudo crontab -r and provide your admin password when asked. This deletes the root cron job that checks the DNS Server …

Mac OS X scares security spods (and WCC FTW)

Trick or IT Blogwatch? In which we worry about the security of Leopard’s new, errr, security features. Not to mention Weebl’s weighted companion cube…

      Robert McMillan reports:

The security features introduced in Apple’s Leopard operating system update need work. That’s according to security experts who have been putting the new version of Mac OS X through its paces, since the upgrade was introduced last Friday. Leopard introduces a number of important security features to the Mac, but they are often implemented incompletely, leaving users vulnerable to attack … two of Apple’s key security enhancements—Sandboxing and Library Randomization—are great ideas that are imperfectly applied within Leopard.

Leopard/Windows Server and File Sharing Tips

      Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

As Leopard continues to roar across the globe, some of the ways in which Leopard functions differently when it comes to Windows networks and file sharing are creating difficulties for cross-platform users. Here are a few Leopard/Windows tips to keep in mind:

      • WINS functionality is now located in the Network pane of System Preferences (select your network port of choice and then click the Advanced button and you’ll see a WINS tab). In Tiger/Panther, this was in the Directory Access utility. The WINS tab allows you to specify a WINS server and to choose a Windows workgroup.
