Two Days in a Cave. Could you do it?

As some of you may know, I have been caving, or spelunking as it’s sometimes known, several times in the past ten years. Each time I’ve gone was a great experience. One thing that is always on your mind (at least mine) is the fact that at any moment you or anyone in your group could be injured and also that it is very easy to become disoriented and then lost. Trust me, you DO NOT want to become lost in a cave.
The simple truth of being lost is not so bad, because if you stop immedialty and stay calm, you can usually retrace your steps by following small clues like disturbances in the water, foot tracks, even steam from your body. You must be efficient about this though, as trouble starts to truly arise as time passes.
Caves are usually between 55 and 60 degrees year round, and that temperature coupled with being wet from crawling through water all day, can definintely cause your core body temperature to fall. The other factor that comes into play if you happen to get lost is that you only have as much light as you have batteries for your helmet lights. Even when you’re a regular caver, it’s easy to forget your reliance on the lights you carry. Turn off your lights and you’ll be surprised at how utterly and completely devoid of light the “dark” can be.
I saw this article today on CNN on a group of cavers that become lost and felt it was worth sharing with you all. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/25/cave.rescue.ap/index.html

Not one for closed spaces, too many flowers to smell and they need daylight, right? We admire those who can handle that confinement! Reminds us of Tom Sawyer…
